A Reign of Toads
The Witches of Hexwood are a small but famous coven of hedge witches and healers who live in and around the eponymous pine forest along the North Eastern Shore of Cracklaw point. The legends state that the first Hexwood Witch was a noble maiden of House Crabb who learned her craft from the children of the forest. While this is likely nonsense, it is true that, by all accounts, the coven seems to date back into the age of legends and perhaps as far back as the dawn age.
Most of the witches today are simple healers and herb farmers who, because of their remote location and gender, are characterized as fortune telling seers who consort with squishers, perform obscene sexual rites, and cast curses on their enemies. This reputation, while occasionally resulting in a witch hunt or other persectution, more often than not protects them from villagers and many of the witches have leaned in to the stereotype, whittling wooden effigies, hanging bone charms and otherwise making their simple shacks look foreboding.
Most of the witches also sell love potions and cast curses and cantrips to make a little extra coin. Corenna is a notable exception to this, though the dark stories about her circulate all the same. A few of the witches, such as Wynafrei, claim to have magical powers even among other members of the coven. Most have yet to see evidence of prophetic dreaming, blood magic, or coupling with demons, but the Hexwood is precisely the kind of place where one can feel the cold pressing in around them and dream that snarks, grumkins, squishers and the children are lurking behind every branch.
